Has this been the greatest year in the history of Philly sports?

As I took my sabbatical this week, I was pondering this very matter. And wouldn’t you know, Bob Ford had a similar thought running through his head on Sunday. Though, to my credit, Bob is more broadly discussing the run of success Philly teams had between the 1973-74 and 74-75 championships for the Flyers, all the way through Villanova’s 1985 National Championship. It was a pretty solid time for Philly sports, and Bob, like myself, is hoping we are about to embark on another.

But has this past year been as good of a year as we’ve ever had? Continue reading

Quick programming note, and “The Floor is Yours” thread

Alright, so for the next week, probably until next Monday, the blogging around here is going to be pretty light. After almost 8 months of blogging just about every day, and working a pretty serious work schedule, I need a little break. Now, if anything huge happens, I’ll be sure to throw in my two cents – but, that being said, I’ve been feeling a tad uninspired lately, and I think it is due, in some part, to just being a bit burnt out.

One other thing – I’ll obviously continue to run the March Madness Beer Bracket, Thursday through this weekend. As well, consider this particular post as a running thread throughout the next week. The Flyers are hot, the Sixers are quietly positioning themselves for the playoffs, the Giants continue to have Braylon Edwards rumors circling them, the Eagles – well, there is always something to say about the Eagles – Alex Rodriguez loves himself and apparently has treated himself to a bit of “hired help,” the NCAA Tourney should have some great games coming up, and the NFL draft draws near.

Whew.

Anyway, feel free to throw some comments down if you so desire, I’ll throw my two cents in from time to time, we’ll continue with the Beer Bracket, and I’ll resume my normal posting next Monday.

Cheers.

(P.S. On the A-Rod thing – anybody else get the impression that Rodriguez really, really pissed off somebody he shouldn’t have? I mean, it seems like every week, something damaging is coming out about this guy. A-Rod – who’d you screw with, man?)

Now this is what I’m talking about – Eagles sign Leonard Weaver

Finally. I’ve really wanted them to make this move, and they pulled the trigger. Only a one-year deal, which seems to be the Eagles thing this offseason. Guess they’re waiting to see what happens after this season, whether or not there will be an uncapped year. Anyway, I love this move, and perhaps it will be the start of a better direction for what has been a particularly tumultuous offseason.

Quick reminder: make sure to vote in the March Madness Beer Bracket, which will decide Philly’s favorite beer.

Tourney Liveblogging, plus open thread on who the Eagles should draft, fantasy baseball, etc.

While I would like to go back and forth on who the Birds should draft, this is a wide-open thread: feel free to drop a line on anything sports, really. I’ll be doing a liveblog for pretty much the rest of the evening, only breaking to eat/help a buddy with his fantasy baseball draft. So, any thoughts on fantasy baseball are welcome as well – I’m pretty new to the game. Always been more of a fantasy football guy. But I’m thinking I want to go with Utley, unless I can grab a guy like Hanley Ramirez or Pujols at the top. I think Utley is about to have a very big year.

Plus, don’t forget to vote in the March Madness Beer Bracket Extravaganza – 64 beers battling it out for ultimate bragging rights. Your votes will decide the champ. Check that out here.

Here’s what I think will end up happening with the Eagles in the draft. They probably end up using number 21, and either their second or third to move down, drafting one of the top OT prospects. Then, they trade out at 28, probably early in the second round, picking up either another second or a higher third. They use the first second to pick up Donald Brown, and use their next two picks (which will fall somewhere in the late second/early third range) to pick up some combination of players at the following positions: TE, S, WR.

What would I like them to do? Trade the first and their third for Anquan Boldin. At 28, take the best RB left on the board. With their second round pick, select the best OT/TE left on the board.

Thoughts? What guys would you love to see them bring in? Sleepers? The (cough) floor is yours.

And now, to the liveblogging. Open thread in the comments. I’m pumped. Continue reading

Boldin to be shopped; the Pundit uncovers the mentor of Joe Banner; have the Eagles built themselves a doghouse?

First things first – PFT has the news that surely sounds sweet to all of you Birds’ fans out there.

A league source tells us that the Arizona Cardinals are shopping receiver Anquan Boldin to potential trade partners.

Shoot, I’m getting excited again. Of course, somehow – despite the fact that we probably have the resources (two first-round picks, 12 in all), the money to sign him to an extension, and the need for a solid possession receiver who can make big plays after the catch and contribute in the red zone – this won’t happen.

Hey, maybe they never move him. Or maybe he gets traded to the Giants, who knows? But damnit, I’m getting my hopes up once more – will I ever learn?

UPDATE: The Cardinals deny the rumors – wow, what a shocker. TO wasn’t going anywhere either, right?

And now, to reveal the mentor of Joe Banner… Continue reading

Would you make this move if you were the Eagles?

Let’s play the Pundit’s brand new blogging game show, “Would you make this move?”

Here’s a practice question, to get everybody warmed up: With the recent expulsion of Dan Leone, the Eagles have been in the news for reasons they probably don’t like. While many fans side with the Eagles, a rather large group remains disgruntled with the organization. If you were the Eagles, would you sign Kimberly Swann – as an act of good-will toward the fans – to replace Mr. Leone?

Alright, enough of the horseplay – let’s get down to some serious Eagles business. So I’m listening to a little bit of the Jody Mac show on ESPN Radio this morning, and I hear them talking about poor, embittered little Jay Cutler, who is putting it out there that he ain’t happy, and would like a trade if the Broncos don’t want to commit to him long-term. And they get to talking about what teams might be a fit, and your Philadelphia Eagles come up. So I ask:

Would you trade Donovan McNabb to the Broncos for Jay Cutler? Continue reading

A guy the Eagles may have been saving up for?

Per Profootballtalk.com:

The St. Louis Rams have announced that tackle Orlando Pace, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft, has been released.

We recently were told that the Rams had been “trying like hell” to trade Pace.  Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange pointed out earlier today that the move will save the Rams $5.975 million against the 2009 salary cap.

I’m torn on whether or not the Eagles should make a play at Pace, and whether or not they even would. Continue reading
