Four Reasons why it’s okay to root for Villanova if you went to another Big Five school

They’re from Philly

C’mon, people – have some hometown pride. It’s easy enough for me – I’ve been watching Villanova basketball since I was kid. I’ve always been a Big 5 fan, so even when I chose to attend Temple, I always actively followed the other schools. Two brands of Big Fivers seem to take issue with supporting Villanova – people from outside of the region who came into Philly to go to school, and people who have generational ties to a university. Has this been the greatest year in the history of Philly sports?

As I took my sabbatical this week, I was pondering this very matter. And wouldn’t you know, Bob Ford had a similar thought running through his head on Sunday. Though, to my credit, Bob is more broadly discussing the run of success Philly teams had between the 1973-74 and 74-75 championships for the Flyers, all the way through Villanova’s 1985 National Championship. It was a pretty solid time for Philly sports, and Bob, like myself, is hoping we are about to embark on another.

But has this past year been as good of a year as we’ve ever had? Continue reading

Quick programming note, and “The Floor is Yours” thread

Alright, so for the next week, probably until next Monday, the blogging around here is going to be pretty light. After almost 8 months of blogging just about every day, and working a pretty serious work schedule, I need a little break. Now, if anything huge happens, I’ll be sure to throw in my two cents – but, that being said, I’ve been feeling a tad uninspired lately, and I think it is due, in some part, to just being a bit burnt out.

One other thing – I’ll obviously continue to run the March Madness Beer Bracket, Thursday through this weekend. As well, consider this particular post as a running thread throughout the next week. The Flyers are hot, the Sixers are quietly positioning themselves for the playoffs, the Giants continue to have Braylon Edwards rumors circling them, the Eagles – well, there is always something to say about the Eagles – Alex Rodriguez loves himself and apparently has treated himself to a bit of “hired help,” the NCAA Tourney should have some great games coming up, and the NFL draft draws near.

Whew.

Anyway, feel free to throw some comments down if you so desire, I’ll throw my two cents in from time to time, we’ll continue with the Beer Bracket, and I’ll resume my normal posting next Monday.

Cheers.

(P.S. On the A-Rod thing – anybody else get the impression that Rodriguez really, really pissed off somebody he shouldn’t have? I mean, it seems like every week, something damaging is coming out about this guy. A-Rod – who’d you screw with, man?)

And in other news, I got killed on Friday – I had West Virginia making the Elite Eight, and Wake Forest going all the way to the Final Four. Plus, the ol’ alma mater, Temple, fell to Arizona State. Though I kind of expected that…

Ah, well.

And a quick, fun story. So Thursday, I’m doing the liveblog while watching the games. After about four or five hours of liveblogging, you get kind of sick of it. So, I decided to just enjoy the last round of games, blogging be damned. And I was set up – I had one game on the tube, and two more on laptops, one mine, and one my roommates. I’ve got a beer in my hand and some Cheez-Its close by.

Basketball Heaven.

So anyway, I’m all set up, watching the tube from my bed. Now, my bed is perpendicular to the TV, so when I’m watching, half of me is normally on the bed, and if I don’t curl my legs up, the other half of me is on the floor. And don’t you know, about halfway through the second half of the late games, I pass out. And at three in the morning, I wake up, contorted in a position that can’t be good for the spine – head on some pillows, back on bed, legs dangling willy-nilly to the floor. Thankfully, I had finished my beer before catching any Z’s. There were, however, a couple of Cheez-Its hanging out on my shirt.

Mmmm…delicious.

So, I do what anybody else would do – I analyze the situation, eat the Cheez-Its from my shirt…and pass right the hell back out.

Damnit.

I guess I was just really tired, I don’t know. I’ve been pretty busy lately, so sleep has come at a bit of a premium. But man, did I wake up sore as hell, finally moving around at about seven in the morning, fully clothed, lights on, television spewing infomercials, a box of Cheez-Its and two laptops moonlighting as bedside companions. It was a rather pitiful scene.

Right – moving along.

I’ll keep the voting open for the entire weekend, and tally the results Sunday evening around 10 or so. The entire second round is represented below. Now get voting! Continue reading
