Let’s be honest – one of the most exciting things about basketball is trade rumors, concocting trade scenarios, etc. Now, I’m not going to go all Bill Simmons on you and play Monday Morning GM, but I couldn’t help but raise the old brow when I heard Jody Mac say that he read Chad Ford mention, during a live chat, that the Sixers could deal Brand.
Chad Ford: Yes … from what my sources around the league are saying, Brand is available. The question is, given how poorly he’s played this year and his huge contract, does anyone want him?
Chad Ford: I’ve wondered about a Rasheed Wallace for Brand swap but doubt Joe D wants to invest that much money right now on Brand
Alright, let’s look at this from several angles. First of all – would Stefanski admit making a mistake on Brand so early? And, on top of that, is it too soon to determine whether or not he’s made a mistake at all?
Yes, and maybe. Yes, he would admit making the mistake by trading Brand if he could make a move that would keep the Sixers in the playoff picture. The only way to really do that, in my mind, would be to bring in a guy who would thrive in the Sixers running system. I don’t see them totally scrapping this thing, when they’re virtually a lock to make the playoffs – as a low seed, of course – this season.
And as whether or not it’s too early to determine whether Brand was a mistake or not, I still think it’s a bit soon to tell. Clearly, the running game the Sixers thrive on is not really Brand’s forte. That being said, if he can at least blend in, he’s still very valuable to them in the half-court. That is, if they get him the ball.
Oh – and if they can get a friggin’ shooter.
To me, that’s where this team is really at fault. At some point, you need to be able to play the half-court game. Taking Brand out of the low block isn’t going to make you any better at doing that. But, maybe bringing in a natural two, who could hit the outside shot while still being able to run the court…that could work.
But gee, Pundit, who could you move to get a guy like that?
Wait, what’s that – Andre Iguodala is a bit undersized at the three, but can’t really play the two because he lacks a jump shot, which keeps Thaddeus Young coming off of the bench and gives Willie Green minutes?
How about this – Andre Iguodala, Willie Green and Donyell Marshall to the Timberwolves for Randy Foye, Jason Collins, Rashad McCants and Kevin Ollie? The money works. Would you do that? ‘Cuz I would. Your starting five would be Miller, Foye, Young, Brand and Dalembert. I’d be down.
But if they do decide to trade Brand, who would you want? What about the possibility of moving Andre Miller? The floor is yours – check this out to see if the money works.
